Maths curriculum Information

Subject Vision:  “Mathematics reveals its secret only to those who approach it with love, for its own beauty.” Archimedes

Our vision for maths is  based on a ‘mastery’ approach to teaching and learning in mathematics and it is our aim that all pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios.
  • Can reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language.

At Thorverton we are committed to removing barriers from learning to ensure that all pupils are able to make progress across the curriculum. The document attached below identifies some of the ways that we do this in maths:

WELLINGTON SCHOOL YEAR 6 MATHS CHALLENGE - Saturday 25th November 2023

A massive congratulations to Charlie, George, Isaac D and Rosie, who I had the pleasure of accompanying to the Wellington School Maths Challenge on Saturday. As a team, the children completed a 25-question test including a mixture of very challenging multiple choice and reasoning questions. I am enormously proud to say that the children managed to finish an incredible 4th place out of 60 schools that entered from right across the South West!
